Avneet Saini was born and bought up in Ropar, a small town in the north Indian state of Punjab. She was awarded national scholarship for maintaining an excellent academic record in her secondary school examinations and received a certificate of merit for being among the top 0.1% of successful candidates in mathematics in the All India Secondary School Examination.
Avneet attended the Department of Biophysics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India, where she gained a BSc, MSc and PhD—all in Biophysics. She received university medals for coming first throughout her bachelors and masters courses. Her PhD, completed in 2011, was entitled “Peptoids as Antimicrobial and Collagen Mimetics:
A Computational Study”, and involved conformational analysis of peptoids using quantum mechanics and molecular dynamics software. She started her teaching career in 2007 as an Assistant Professor at Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Chandigarh. In 2010 she rejoined Panjab University as Assistant Professor, where she is currently involved in teaching and research.
In her post-doctoral research in London—she analyzed and characterized peptides derived from the family of intermediate filament proteins that have an ability to bind unpolymerized tubulin. This binding alters tubulin polymerization making it possible to disrupt intracellular transport and/or cell mobility and proliferation.
After completing her research in London, Avneet returned to Panjab University in 2015 where she is actively involved in research and teaching. She has three PhD students enrolled under her. In Dec 2017, she was awarded a Research grant worth 60,00,000 INR by the Defense Research and Development Organization, India. At, present she is also the Warden of Working Women Hostel at Panjab University. She hopes to continue to expand her expertise in areas including protein-protein interactions and experimental methods of structural characterization.
